Real Cool shit????????

-1

Lately there has been a ton of hype about this mp3 shit (o.k. -it's July of 99 and I'm just getting around to checking it out). Matter of fact I don't even have a sound card in my unix box (I always figured that little half inch warning speaker that beeps inside the case was a sound system). Seeing as I don't use windows or mac, my venture started off slow and I found it easier to just compile the kernel on my laptop to support sound and use it. Well I got it all set up and got a mp3 player (gqmpeg) compiled. Now all I needed was a mp3 file to test it to see if the player worked. Here is where my journey begins. Now keep in mind, all I want to do is download a single mp3 file so I can test the player. Well I go to mp3search.lycos.com and I figure it will take me 2 minutes tops to find a test file and download it. I type in "south park" and I see a file called uncle fucka (a great clip from the movie) and I figure that's the one I'll get. I click the link and get this. I figure, no sweat, I got over 150 links left to go I'm bound to find a file. Well I clicked all 150 fucking links and all I got was this.. Well Now my simple two minute venture is going on well over 45 minutes and all i'm getting is "server too busy' and "file not found"-(you know, like when you click on a link at Greenguys). Keep in mind, all I need is a single mp3 file to test my player. I figure south park may be too popular, so I type in "ramones" (a favorite group of mine). 30 hits come up and I start clicking away. Same shit happens, I feel like I'm over at Greenguys because all I'm getting is "server too busy and "404's. Now I got over an hour in my quest and still no mp3 file. I spend another hour and still no luck. Far as I'm concerned, lycos can shove their shitty piece of shit mp3 search engine up their ass. Well by this time I'm really desperate and nothing is getting done and all I want is a lousy mp3 file so I can test my fucking player. I start to use my brain and type in Aqua -- (I figure they suck pretty bad and there wouldn't be much of a demand for the so ever popular "barbie girl". Anyway, I start clicking away on the search results and after about another 20 minutes a find a ftp server that doesn't refuse the connection. Well it's a slow server and it took me over 25 minutes to download a crappie 5 meg file. But hey, I'm a lucky guy because I'm going to have my very own copy of "barbie girl" which I can play over and over till my ears bleed or I puke. Now comes the moment of truth, I fire up gqmpeg and start jamming barbie girl on my laptop. I must admit, the sound quality was good, but then again anything by Aqua would probably sound good through a tin can and some string. It only took me 3 hours, but I'm a happy man.

The moral of the story

If you like really shitty music and have a lot of time on your hands, by all means jump on the mp3 band wagon. As for me, I'll just stick to the radio and buying a cd. The next time I have 3 hours of spare time on my hands, I'll probably go look for a spice girls file and add it to my incredibly large mp3 collection of 1 and double it's size. On second thought, I think I'll just jack off.
